A growing number of companies are today working hand in hand (and tracking) their employees in am effort to create a more healthy and productive workforce. Is this a trend to be concerned about? Has big brother gone too far? Or is this a step in the right direction to counter the growing worldwide obesity epidemic?
Recently, the employees at a firm in the United Kingdom have become guinea pigs in a living workplace experiment. Participation in this effort was compulsory. Employees who did not wish to participate were kindly shown the door. Management has begun using mobile apps to track the lives of all staff.
The reason for this effort is two-fold. Firstly, the company wishes to move in pasture their staff into achieving their fitness goals in an effort to become more healthy, more productive, and reduce staff down time. Secondly, the firm has a stated culture and way of doing business that they wish their staff to adhere to and live by in an effort to achieve greater corporate success and profits. The company feels that their is untapped potential that they wish to squeeze out.
Employees were kindly asked to head on over their app store of choice and download specific apps that had been pre-selected by the company. Now here is where we enter into a Big Brother type of scenario. The company now tracks such factors as what their employees eat, how many calories they consume, how much time do they spend sitting or standing at their desks, how happy or unhappy they are, how many steps they take per day, how much they run or walk, and even how many hours they sleep per night. Employees who opted out of the experiment openly asked 'What is next? Will they eventually track our private sex lives?'
But other employees have embraced the experiment and are gung ho about using apps and technology to improve their wellness and the wellness of the company. Because the corporate bottom line is the bottom line. In other words, it's the company's revenue that pays everyone's salary, puts food on the table, pays their mortgage or rent, pays for their car, pays for the leisurely excursions, puts their children through school, etc.
In addition to getting on board with all the apps to track many aspects of their lives, employees also have begun a fitness regimen. But every person and every employee is unique. Therefore, all participants are given an overall physical assessment of their current level of fitness and then provided with a custom tailored fitness program that also includes nutrition guidelines. But happiness with one's life and work is also key to the success of the program. Therefore, employees are told not to stress too much over what they eat or how much they are eating. Eating something savory and sweet can make some much more happy than eating a salad with no dressing.
Yet because the fitness and exercise programs are custom and tailor made for each person individually, it is possible for an employee to achieve the benefits and results of a typical 30-minute workout in approximately half the time.
During the day, employees are prompted through the smart phone app sending push notifications reminding them to participate in a twice daily survey. During this survey, they are asked several questions such as how awake they are, how relaxed to they fell, and of course - rate their happiness. This feedback is necessary to gauge results for each participant and to gauge results for the overall program.

Fitness Blowout Reviews these and other types of programs and has concluded that they are indeed cutting edge, not overly intrusive, and have shown great promise towards improving overall health, fitness and wellness. It's wellness that can reduce on sickness, sick days and downtime, leading to a more productive workforce, and improved bottom line, and greater personal happiness and fulfillment. In short, Fitness Blowout says 'Nice job!'
Physical fitness is imperative to living healthy, living long, and living happy. Physical fitness in and of itself is not the only key to a happy life but it's a key factor. Other factors include personal development and maintaining a healthy life/work balance. In reality, inner peace and outward positivity are in, and negativity and stress are out.
